The Hobbit - Basing my collection

One thing I decided to do over Christmas was to actually base my Hobbit collection rather than simply leaving their bases black. Using some instant mould and a lot of greenstuff I made suitable bases for all of the models from the 'Escape from Goblin Town' set which I think turned out quite well. I also took some time to base the other misc. Hobbit models I have picked up over the past few years.

Hello Strangers!

Been a while since my last post unfortunately. University has been getting in the way. Damn you education system! Now I have 4 months of holidays so I should be getting back into it.
Unfortunately, right now I'm the only one back so until my compadres return and we can get back to gaming I'm stuck twiddling my thumbs. So instead of being completely lazy I set myself to (attempting) to make some terrain to see what I could come up with!
At first I didn't have much to work with apart from some card I found around the place so I started experimenting and making some prototypes to see what I could try and make work until the plasticard I ordered arrived.
As does pretty much everything in my life I started of with doodles!

For the first time in my life Pythagoras actually came in handy!

I had an idea from the space hulk set to try and make a kind of multi part trench or walkway so that you can mix and match and make whatever kind of pattern you want with them. For the prototypes I just made a corner section, a ramp and an end section with a platform.

I'm planning to make these out of plasticard and glue instead of tape and card when I can and make a few different types such as T sections, crossroads, straight sections and I'm going to try making an end section that ends in rubble to make it look like its been destroyed.

These work quite well to say they are only made from card and tape. But the walkways on these are only 30mm across which leads to problems for anything that doesn't have a 25mm base.

With this in mind I went a bit more adventurous (and sympathetic for the fattys with their 40mm bases) and went for something a bit larger.

As you can see the ramp on this I made larger. A whole 75mm to be exact! This means that even the chunky dreadnoughts can amble their way up into a better firing position.

Then a miracle occurred! The plasticard arrived! *cue fireworks*
Before I started remaking all that I had already made out of card I decided to have a play around first and came up with this.

IMHO I don't think its too bad for a first try. The ramp is 50mm across so provides access for terminators and other 40mm base models.
My main problem now however is that I need to find some cheap gray paint and get them looking all pretty!

I'm going to try making more like these so I'll post the results when I can!

Terrain and other large things in your way

Personally, I love to make things. My favorite part of getting new models is seeing all the different positions I can get them into! I love modeling and putting my own little details in with a little bit of green stuff or milliput here and there. I know some people enjoy the painting much more (understandable as paint washes of your fingers MUCH easier than glue! I know from experience) but not me! I've always enjoyed the modeling more. I have plenty of ideas for little scenes and battle scenarios that i really want to make even though most are WAY out of my ability (I need more practice with green stuff and milliput). But anyway instead of creating models I'm going to see if i can make some terrain!

Now, I have made some terrain in the past and it was AMAZING!!! . . . Nahh it was terrible really. Make of cardboard and some pins of some kind. It was crudely cut and terribly arranged. This time I plan on being alot more careful but also start experimenting with different materials and things just lying around the house to see what i can make! So should be fun. I'm planning on buying myself some plasticard and some foam board as a cheap but vast improvement on cardboard. So far I'm planning on using tin cans, ribbed piping, the top parts of bottles, all sorts! I'll tell you if actually create anything worthwhile! If i do I'll post some pictures or something and hope you all like it!

Although as i said before, it most likely wont be painted. I may basecoat it with my chaos black spray paint (yes i still refer to it as chaos black! Stupid new colour names) if i can be bothered. I may even leave it at my friends house like i did some of my other terrain (store bought this time) as he volunteered to paint it for me! Also, that means one less thing to remember when i head down for gaming! I'm always forgetting my dice and tape measure. Whoops!

Anyhow, I shall upload pics when i can if anything successful emerges from all these random thoughts and ideas!
